For as long as I can remember my mom has always been full of laughter. If she isn’t laughing she’s smiling which I know has contributed to her youthful appearance.
Mom has been through a lot of trials in her life as I have shared in previous blogs and has sat by many a bedside saying goodbye to loved ones. The Lord has been her constant companion filling her with strength to weather every storm, plus laughter has helped her heal too.
Three years ago when she said see you later to my dad, my daughter decided she needed to make her Kookum (grandma) laugh. So she decided to video her making bannock.
I am of indigenous decent and bannock was a main staple in our household. Many of times I would come home from school smelling the freshly baked dough and we would gobble it up in no time smothering it in butter or jam.
I was raised in a Christian home so we did not follow all of the indigenous ways of life. I was not raised to know the creator or great spirit but I knew the Creator, one and only Great Spirit-Jesus. That culture is very foreign to me but when the grand kids came along, mom wanted to be called, “kookum,” which means grandma in the Cree language. Both of my parents could speak Cree fluently. A language that is now being lost in my generation and future generations to come, a sad reality.
Laughter is good for the soul. My last post I shared on sourdough and I’m on week 4 of making beautiful creations and I’m shocked at how they are turning out! I decided to share the YouTube video my daughter made of my mom so you too can share in the laughter! And why not more baking while we are on a roll!
Enjoy!
